An image that has often come to my mind in comparison to the dynamic sound of a tanpura is that of the concentric ripples on the surface of the water caused by the impact of a small stone being dropped into a quiet lake from a bridge. The tanpura sale is a fret less stringed instrument used to produce the atmospheric drone that is ubiquitous in northern Indian classical music. The electronic tanpura is a sophisticated musical instrument for providing accompaniment to performers of music. This tanpura is slightly smaller than the male version above but it too has a very sweet jawari (tone).
