Being Outplaced?

Currently, my mother’s place of employment is working with an outplacement consultant to determine how they can run the business more effectively. Part of the process includes cutting down the number of clerical and support staff. The problem for my mom comes in because she is one of those people. She has been given a plan that she has to follow with human resources. If she does not follow it exactly, she will be out of a job. The thing that does not seem at all fair about the situation is that they are looking for ANY small reason to get rid of her. If they need to downsize, why don’t they just tell her that her position has been eliminated instead of putting her through all the hoops?
